A Brain- eating "Zombie" amoeba outbreak is taking peoples lives in Pakistan.

What is Brain-eating Zombie Amoeba?

Naegleria fowleri, colloquially known as a "brain-eating amoeba", is a species of the genus Naegleria, belonging to the phylum Percolozoa, which is technically not classified as a true amoeba, but a shapeshifting amoeboflagellate excavate.

How does it Affect people?

The ameba then travels up the nose to the brain, where it destroys the brain tissue and causes a devastating infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). PAM is almost always fatal.

How does it spread?

According to Telegraph.co.uk Warm, pure water is normally ideal for the amoeba growth. Although infections are uncommon, the parasites preference for warmth has led to theories that they might become more frequent as a result of climate change.
When swimming or scuba diving in lakes and rivers, it is normal to take up the parasite, which enters the body by the nose. Additionally, it can get into the nose by washing, like while performing religious ablutions.

The amoeba enters the nose, moves up to the brain, and starts tearing away tissue. This quickly results in swelling and death.
The amoeba is killed by chlorination and cannot be passed from person to person or through drinking water. The most recent fatality in the US occurred earlier this month in Texas after a 10 year old girl went swimming in the Brazos river over the Labour Day holiday and died.
