Uddhav Thackeray Confronts Election Officials Over Bag Searches Amid Campaign

During his election campaign in Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), was subjected to routine bag searches by election officials in Yavatmal and Latur. The searches, carried out as part of election protocol, sparked a controversy. In a video shared by PTI, Thackeray is seen questioning the election official, Mahesh Shani, about his identity and demanding to see his ID card, appointment letters, and the money in his pockets.

Thackeray, however, made it clear that he had no personal issue with the officials, stating, "I am not angry with you... we should not do other peoples jobs." He voiced concerns over the impartiality of the election process, claiming that such searches were not conducted on leaders from the ruling alliance. The Sena (UBT) party has alleged that the bags of such leaders may contain cash used for vote-buying.

The controversy deepened following a similar search in Yavatmal the previous day. Thackerays aide, Sanjay Raut, questioned whether prominent leaders from the ruling alliance, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, faced similar scrutiny during their campaigns. He argued that while their own belongings—helicopters, cars, and even homes—were searched, there appeared to be preferential treatment toward the ruling party leaders, with large sums of money reportedly flowing to their constituencies.




Thackerays outburst highlights ongoing tensions between his faction and the rival group led by Eknath Shinde, especially in the lead-up to the elections.
